This past few months have been really busy for me working on new pieces for some friends, playing fun shows with Balún and moving to a nice new place! There are many great things happening and I wanted to share some of them with you. The amazing janus trio just finished recording my piece “Drawings for Meyoko” for their upcoming album on New Amsterdam Records titled “i am not” which will be out on November 2010. All of the pieces in the album sound incredible and I feel really lucky to be a part of this project! I’m also very excited to announce that I’ve been selected to be one of three 2011 MATA Commissionees and will be working on a new piece for Cantori New York for the MATA Festival 2011 which will be held on May 2011 at (Le) Poisson Rouge. The piece will be for choir and live electronics and will feature myself on voice, toys and electronics.

I also recently finished a new piece for Beaten Paths Percussion Duo + Christa Van Alstine titled “Four Ways To Eat Cereal” which will be premiered on October 29th at Tenri Cultural Center and my recent piece for Cadillac Moon Ensemble “Quimbombó” received a Robert Starer Award from the Graduate Center. Also in the works is a new piece for the very talented percussion trio the howl (theory) and a new work for my friend toy pianist Phyllis Chen in which she’ll be playing lots of tiny things.

On another note, my students from Brooklyn Phil’s SRI Program in PS 250 were in the Daily News and I couldn’t be prouder! Here is a link to download the article and read about these wonderful third graders.

the sun is (almost) here

Finally some nice days in the city with the sun shining! It’s a perfect month for going out to concerts and I would like to invite you to some! For the past months I’ve been working on a few new pieces for my friends from Cadillac Moon Ensemble and Iktus Percussion Quartet. Both pieces will be premiered this month (check the events page for more info) in really exciting concerts with very interesting programs. For both of these pieces I’ve been trying new things: in the piece I wrote for CME I’m using some rhythms and melodic gestures from Puerto Rico and in the piece I wrote for Iktus I’m using only found percussion instruments like playing cards, crystal glasses, hand fans and newspapers, among other things.

I’m also working on a new piece about different ways of eating cereal so stay tuned!

Arturo en el Barco will be performing in Redhooker’s CD Release Party this Sunday January 31st at (Le) Poisson Rouge. This show it’s going to be really nice and I can’t wait to play again with everyone!

When I started “Arturo en el Barco” five years ago, I originally thought of the project as a live chamber ensemble even though it took the form of a solo endeavor. But now it’s finally happening! We are finally an ensemble. I’m very happy to announce the debut of the new AEEB as part of the great Archipelago Series from New Amsterdam Records. We’ll be playing on Friday Nov. 20th at the lovely Galapagos Arts Space premiering a set of six new songs under the title “Let the Sun Shine on Me and Make Me Feel Special”. Matt Marks (french horn), Andie Springer (violin), Insia Malik (violin), Evelyn Farny (cello), Beth Meyers (viola, banjo) and José Olivares (electronics) will join me in this new adventure!

Missy Mazzoli’s awesome Victoire will also be playing that night previewing some new material from their upcoming NewAm album!

I’ve been working for a while curating this concert for MATA and now it’s almost here. PLAY! will showcase new works for toy piano, balloons, music boxes, vintage toys and electronics with performances by the new music group TRANSIT, balloon artist Judy Dunaway, vocalist Jennifer Walshe, percussionist Douglas Perkins and very special guest Margaret Leng Tan, pioneer in the use of toy instruments. Tristan Perich will be premiering a new piece for three toy pianos and three-channel 1-bit tones and TRANSIT will also be premiering my new piece “What I’m Trying To Say Is…” which features a Speak & Spell toy!
